Usage and specifications

How to use this tool

Paste text to update total characters, counts excluding spaces or newlines, line count and UTF-8 bytes. Compare the values with the rules of your submission form rather than assuming every service counts in the same way.

Understanding the result

The count excluding spaces removes ordinary spaces, full-width spaces, tabs and other Unicode space separators, but keeps newlines. The count excluding newlines keeps spaces. A third value excludes both.

When to use it

Check the length of a report, a form entry or the UTF-8 size of a text file. Confirm whether the destination includes whitespace in its limit before choosing a result.

Practical tips

Empty input has zero lines; A followed by a newline has two. Windows CRLF and CR are normalized to LF before counting. Entered text is processed in your browser.

Worked examples

Separate spaces from newlines

Input / settingsResult
A B
C
5 total / 4 without spaces / 4 without newlines / 3 without either / 2 lines / 5 bytes

Japanese text and emoji

Input / settingsResult
γ‚πŸ˜€
2 characters / 1 line / 7 UTF-8 bytes

Specifications and limitations

  • Characters are Unicode code points. πŸ˜€ counts as one, but the joined family emoji πŸ‘¨β€πŸ‘©β€πŸ‘§β€πŸ‘¦ counts as seven. A letter plus a combining accent counts as two. This can differ from the number of visible symbols.
  • Social network URL weighting, platform-specific limits and manuscript page cells are not reproduced. Confirm the final value at your destination.
  • The input limit is 5,000,000 JavaScript string units. Very large input can slow down the browser.
